Arctic Terror

December 13th, 1953

The Far Northwest Territories Near The North Pole

IT SCREAMED OVER the horizon with a winding moan, lighting the darkened sky, changing night into day, and leaving a turbulent roar in its wake. The vibration was severe. Like a thousand thunders, Nat Kallipik thought, as the frigid water slapped suddenly out of the hole he’d cut in the pack ice. The ground rumbled again and his team of dogs cried and yelped like frightened puppies. Nat’s dark eyes traced the source of the disturbance, fixing it with seemingly meaningless landmarks on the bleak tundra. It couldn’t be more than ten miles away, to the northeast.

The rumbling stopped and Nat began immediately to shoulder his rifle and pick up his hunting gear. His brother Oingoot, who had cut his hole about fifty yards away, called to him in their native Inuit.

“An airplane, do you think?”

“I don’t know, but we’d better check,” Nat called back. “Someone may be out there.”

Oingoot studied the vestiges of the strange orange glow that was still faintly visible on the horizon, and he felt a shiver move up his spine.

“Something is out there, all right,” he muttered to himself as began to collect his own gear.
